An Update On Our Commitment To Responsible Resourcing

At Parkdean Resorts we recognise our responsibility in ensuring sound social and environmental practices in our own on-park operations and in our supply chain.

This means moving to working with the right suppliers who not only meet our quality standards but also those who share our values and source their products responsibly according to the standards we set, which include upholding human rights, food safety, ethical sourcing, animal welfare and environmental standards.

We have already taken steps to make changes where doing so would have beneficial impact but we also know that there is more we can do and we will continue to make improvements.

    Food sourcing

We work to continually improve our food and beverage offering to our customers. While there are elements of our supply chain that, due to their nature, are fragmented, we take the initiative where we can and respond to issues which arise.

    Eggs

All of our shell eggs are sourced from free-range sources and we now only purchase mayonnaise made with free-range eggs. We are currently working on the status of eggs used more widely within our supply chain with a commitment to only use cage-free / free range eggs by 2023.

    Meat

We use Red Tractor certified meat for all of the fresh beef burgers and sausages we use. Red Tractor is the UK’s largest farm and food standards scheme, covering the welfare of animals, food safety, traceability and environmental protection.

    Fish

All fish we use is sourced from Marine Stewardship Council certified sustainable fisheries.

    Fats

We use vegetable oil in all our restaurants and we are actively looking at ways to reduce our use of palm oil while maintaining the freshness and quality of our fish and chips in our outlets.

    Coffee

One of our major coffee suppliers has worked with the Rainforest Alliance since 2008 and today all the coffee beans sourced for their drinks come from Rainforest Alliance certified farms. We are working towards increasing the proportion of Rainforest Alliance coffee we use.

    Soft Drinks

We work with suppliers who are striving to reduce sugar across their range of drinks. The work they are doing allows us to provide our customers with healthier alternatives.

    Ethical Trading Initiative

The Ethical Trading Initiative is a leading alliance of companies, trade unions and non-governmental organisations which promotes respect for workers' rights around the globe.

By the end of 2019 we are targeting to have 75% of our suppliers signed-up to the Ethical Trading Initiative Base Code.

The new accommodation offering is impressive, in a spectacular location, with great views. It’s the perfect way to enjoy the great outdoors and get close to nature.”

Ruda Holiday Park holds a David Bellamy Conservation Award Scheme (DBCAS) gold award with distinction for helping wildlife, saving resources and being honey bee friendly. When building the Glamping Village, the team has ensured that the surrounding area and its wildlife have been considered, ensuring minimal disruption throughout. Giving families the option to make the most of the great outdoors in comfort, each of the tents comprises of a small equipped kitchen, tables and chairs in a lounge area, separate sleeping areas with comfortable beds and fresh linen, electric lighting and plug sockets, as well as an outdoor decking space.

Six of the tents will be safari plus, offering a television and DVD player, a larger interior and outdoor decking area, as well as toilet facilities in the tent in addition to the above. Bookings can be made now to go glamping.

In addition, families can enjoy all the facilities the holiday park has to offer, including the Cascades Tropical Adventure Pool, soft play, amusement arcade and adventure playground. Holidaymakers can learn to surf at the on-park surfing school or simply relax and soak up the sunshine on beautiful Croyde Bay.

    Northumberland
J.K.Rowling’s hugely popular series Harry Potter is an enchanting and mythical world of adventure based at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry - so well-loved it became a film franchise.

Alnwick Castle in Northumberland was the chosen location for the scenes where Harry Potter took his very first broomstick lessons in front of the castle’s dramatic setting, which can be visited on a tour. The castle can be conveniently reached from all five of Parkdean Resorts’ North East holiday parks, including Church Point, Cresswell Towers and Sandy Bay.

There’s also The World of Beatrix Potter which can be found in Bowness-on-Windermere - an interactive journey through her life and stories. Parkdean Resorts’ Fallbarrow Holiday Park is located a short walk from The World of Beatirx Potter and an ideal base to explore the whole of Windermere from.

    Dorset
The Famous Five is a children’s series by English writer Enid Blyton, discovering adventure, friendship and fun, with various moments in the stories set in Dorset. With its striking coastline and rolling countryside, the county provided a vast playground for characters Julian, Dick, Anne, George and dog Timmy to explore.

Families can explore the area for themselves and create stories of their own as they go. Each of Parkdean Resorts’ three holiday parks in Dorset is surrounded by countless opportunities for adventure.

    Yorkshire
Wuthering Heights is the classic tale of love and revenge by Emma Brontë, one of the famous Brontë sisters. Discover where Cathy and Heathcliff first fell for each other in the Yorkshire moors around the village of Haworth, walk around the Brontë waterfalls, and visit Top Withens - the supposed setting of Earnshaw family house.

This picturesque location in Yorkshire makes it a fantastic place to bring the family and educate any little ones on this classic tale. Parkdean Resorts has four Yorkshire holiday parks to choose from.

    Hampshire
Hampshire was home to one of Britain’s most celebrated novelists Jane Austen, and the inspiration to many of her best loved books.

Organic growth drives very strong performance

Parkdean Resorts, the owner and manager of 72, award winning, UK holiday parks is a business of scale and nationwide spread. Today, it announces its first combined results for 2015.

Parkdean Resorts was created through the merger of Parkdean and Park Resorts which completed on 10 November 2015 creating the sector leader. The Group has a widespread portfolio of predominantly freehold holiday parks across England, Wales and Scotland and is well positioned to drive benefits of scale from the UK’s highly fragmented holiday park sector.

Combined pro-forma revenues for the year increased substantially to £400.7m (2014 - £370.7m) and EBITDA on the same basis increased 15.7% to £106.6m (2014 - £92.1m). Cash generation was again strong.

Growth has been delivered through organic growth in the existing estate with only one acquisition, Summerfields near Great Yarmouth, in April 2015. The Group invested £36m in 2015 in additional pitches for private holiday home owners, the expansion and upgrade of its holiday hire fleet and their on park retail facilities.

Parkdean Resorts benefitted from growth across a number of diversified but complementary income streams: Owner income, holiday sales, caravan and lodge sales and on-park spend. All income areas showed growth in 2015, with primary income areas of owner income growing by 9.4% and holiday hire revenue by 11.5% over the prior year. During the year, across the 72 well invested and modern parks with 35,600 pitches and 22,000 owners, the Group sold c.492, 000 holidays and over 2 million customers were accommodated. Additionally, 5,300 holiday homes were sold.

The merger of the two businesses has given us improved geographic coverage with a truly national business and a balanced product mix across the portfolio. Our strategy is to primarily grow organically by further investment in the existing estate – including increasing the number of pitches, upgrading caravan and lodge holiday accommodation and new and improved retail and leisure facilities. We shall also look to extend the season where practical.

In the current year, we will continue to invest in a pipeline of revenue enhancing development and expansionary opportunities across the estate, investing c. £40m. This will include 400 replacement and upgraded caravans and lodges, c.200 additional caravan and lodge hire fleet, an additional 240 pitches for holiday homes and upgrades of retail facilities. Major retail projects include expanded or new facilities at Sandy Bay Northumberland, White Cross Bay Lake District, Manor Park and Summerfields Norfolk, Southview Lincolnshire, Coopers Beach Essex, Nodes Point Isle of Wight and Southerness Dumfries and Galloway.

The Group continues to invest in double glazed centrally heated caravans and lodges to enable the parks to have longer, more productive seasons with improved yield and benefit from the enduring trend of UK customers taking more frequent, but shorter holidays. Community Spirit Takes Centre Stage to Preserve Iconic Theatre

THE show is set to go on for one of Newcastle’s best-loved theatres with a group of volunteers stepping into the showbiz spotlight this autumn to raise funds for its ongoing preservation.

Friends of the Tyne Theatre & Opera House, part of the Tyne Theatre and Opera House Preservation Trust, set up a new operating company to run the theatre in January 2015 and will be staging a production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance this September.

With a cast and orchestra of over 60 amateur and semi-professional actors and musicians, the popular show promises an energetic comedy interpretation of the operetta, based on a rollicking band of pirates too kind-hearted for their own good.

Organisers are looking forward to showcasing the talent on offer and highlighting the venue as a place where other like-minded groups can perform, to help ongoing efforts to restore the theatre to its former glory. All profits from ticket sales will also go directly to the preservation of the iconic Grade-I listed building.

The show’s musical director is Mike Wilmot, finance director for Gosforth-headquartered Parkdean Holidays. The award-winning holiday operator is the headline sponsor for the show and has provided the Trust with set and costume support, alongside various other up-front costs to get the show off the ground.

The Pirates of Penzance showing will also mark the 80th birthday of fellow director, Jack Dixon, who played a key role in bringing the theatre back to life through initiating a ‘Save the Stoll’ campaign following its closure as a cinema in 1974.

Mike said: “My personal connection to the theatre goes way back. Not only was I a member of the youth theatre alongside my sister, who is now a professional actress – I was even an usher there in my teens. I also have a vivid recollection of my Mum and Dad helping to remove the theatre seats for preservation on Boxing Day in 1985 following a near-devastating fire, so needless to say it’s a building I feel very passionately about preserving.”

Originally built in 1867, the Tyne Theatre & Opera House is one of the oldest fully operational Victorian theatres in the UK and has been through various stages of ownership and functionality during its time. Its unique features include a beautifully lavish auditorium and intact full set of Victorian stage machinery.

The Pirates of Penzance has been performed numerous times at the Tyne Theatre and Opera House over the years, therefore it’s fitting it will mark the Trust’s first community production since its formation in 2007.

Renowned for its witty plot; deception, paradoxes, revelations and bravery make up a colourful production which is peppered with tuneful sing-alongs and a sparklingly funny script, sure to entertain audiences of all ages.

Mike added: “This production of The Pirates of Penzance will bring back former members and staff of the Theatre from over 30 years ago, alongside members from other local societies, so it is a real labour of love for everyone involved.

“My fellow Trust members and I are really keen to ensure it is a resounding success and drive home the importance of community support in keeping buildings such as this alive – they are the cultural backbone of our society.”

The Friends of Tyne Theatre and Opera House’s production of The Pirates of Penzance will run from Tuesday 22 September to Saturday 26 September, from 7.30pm each evening.

Further information regarding tickets can be found on the Theatre website, www.tynetheatreandoperahouse.uk or by calling the booking hotline, 0844 249 1000.

Audience members will also have the opportunity to take part in a pre-performance theatre heritage talk and tour, for which advance booking is required.

It's Better in Britain: Devon and Cornwall Residents Opt to Stay on British Shores This Summer

WITH the UK enjoying a steady summer to date in the weather stakes, it’s no surprise British holidaymakers are opting to stick to their own shores for annual breakaways.

A recent survey conducted by Parkdean Holidays shows many are planning to do just that, with 41% of Devon and Cornwall residents choosing to holiday right on their doorsteps.

The holiday park operator surveyed 1000 respondents in the South West of the UK to gauge the perception of Devon and Cornwall as a holiday destination amongst people living close by.

With 45% of South Westerners stating that the sheer beauty of the area is enough to keep them on British shores, it’s clear the British staycation is clearly still alive and kicking. The better weather would make 38% of locals more likely to choose to holiday here with 41% claiming that the higher costs of foreign holidays are also a key factor in choosing to ‘nearcation’ closer to home.

Cornwall’s Kynance Cove Beach proved one of the most popular places to visit amongst 28% of 45 to 54-year-olds, with the area’s stunning beaches coming out on top with a whopping 78% of locals recommending tourists head straight for sand and sea on arrival.

Devon and Cornwall’s historical sites came a close second ‘must-see’, with 44% of 25 to 34-year-olds recommending tourists take in the local heritage and 37% of local people touting surfing as a top activity to try.

The survey also revealed some local gastronomy preferences with the iconic and much-loved cream tea proving a ‘must-try’ amongst 62% of women in particular – be it Devonshire or Cornish. The amount of respondents agreeing that jam first, clotted cream second is the only way to go with cream tea scones was double those who put the jam on last.

To inspire the British public to enjoy a staycation this summer and enjoy the delights which Cornwall and Devon both have to offer, Parkdean has compiled an insider’s guide* to the local’s best kept secrets on the South West tourist trail, ideal for families and holiday makers of all ages.

Parkdean has 24 holiday parks across the UK situated in some of the country’s best coastal, countryside and woodland locations, 14 which are based in the South West, with eight in Cornwall and three in Devon.

Parkdean’s Chief Executive, John Waterworth, said: “It’s fantastic to hear how proud Devon and Cornwall natives are about their home county – they are the best ambassadors for putting this beautiful area on the tourist map.

“With miles of coastline to explore, our holiday parks in the South West, and indeed Devon and Cornwall specifically make perfect summer holiday destinations, from families with young children, groups of friends or couples – there really is something for everyone here.”

World-class surf spot Croyde Bay is a short walk from the holiday park and its mobile sand dunes make it a SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest). The beach was also awarded a Seaside Award this year, a nationally recognised symbol of quality guaranteeing a clean, safe and attractive beach.

Rose said: “We run a lot of events for local children who are interested in learning about how they can protect their beach and the wildlife on it. Seeing how enthusiastic they are is wonderful and these sessions will help keep this holiday spot beautiful for generations to come.”

Throughout the summer months, Rose supports the Parkdean Entertainment Team by running rockpool rambles, wild animal tracking sessions, bug hunts and beginners fishing for holiday makers of all ages as well as a range of conservation activity.

Award-winning holiday operator Parkdean Holidays has noticed the trend for family mini-breaks and staycations is on the rise, and the stars are doing it too.

The NCC (National Caravan Council) has noticed it’s growing in popularity too and recently launched the Freedom To Go campaign which helps go-as-you-please adventurers to find the best holiday parks and campsites around the UK.

Parkdean Holidays Chief Executive John Waterworth said: “Parkdean Holiday Parks are the perfect place for a family holiday because we have facilities to suit the needs of all the ages and tastes that brothers, sisters, mums and dads have. Sometimes when you want a holiday you don’t want to spend hours at the airport or half of the first day on a flight.

“We’re lucky enough to live in a beautiful country and our UK-wide parks are testament to that – the beaches, woodlands and views which surround our Holiday Parks are idyllic locations for a getaway. Camping, touring and caravanning gives you a great sense of freedom and adventure making them the ideal option for familes looking for a break from their hectic schedule.”

Celebrity chef and father of four Jamie Oliver regularly bundles his family into his campervan in search of adventure and likes to cook up a storm when he gets there – promoting the joys of cooking and eating outdoors as a family.

Meanwhile British actress Dame Helen Mirren hops in her motorhome whenever she wants to escape the city. She is also a proud member of the Caravan Club.

It’s not just romantic tents and campervans though, other celebrity parents including WAG Coleen Rooney, national sweetheart Lorraine Kelly and Take That member Mark Owen, all book a caravan holiday when they feel like they need some family time.

As seen on Daily Mail online Coleen recently had a caravan holiday with her two children and her children loved it so much she is looking to buy one for future family staycations in the UK.

Meanwhile The Sun online reports that British television presenter Lorraine Kelly takes a trip down memory lane when she goes on caravan holidays with many fond memories of trips to Scottish holiday parks when she was a child.

Turtle Tots Partners With Park Resorts To Roll Out Award-Winning Infant Swim Programme Across UK Holiday Parks

Award-winning children’s swim programme Turtle Tots, has announced a partnership with the UK’s largest Holiday Park operator, Park Resorts, to roll out its popular swimming classes, initially across three holiday park locations

    - Southview Leisure Park, Skegness
    - Valley Farm Holiday Park, Clacton-on-Sea
    - St. Margaret’s Bay Holiday Park, Dover

Turtle Tots’ swim programme offers affordable, safe, structured swim sessions for babies, toddlers and children up to the age of 4 years. The emphasis is on safety, building confidence in the water at your own pace, learning new skills and most important of all, having fun.

Using Park Resorts’ on-site swimming pools, the classes will be available for holidaymakers as well as for local residents who live near to the respective parks. Park Resorts has signed a three-year agreement with Turtle Tots to roll out these sessions as an additional activity for its customers and also as draw for the local community.

Caroline Sparks, Commercial Director at Turtle Tots explains: “The partnership with Park Resorts is a great opportunity for our growing nationwide brand. We plan to run the sessions for one year and then to continue to roll out the classes across different locations during the following two years. The Turtle Tots approach is also very different, to some of the larger child swim chains out there, the experience is far more personal and not at all intimidating, which is massively important, because plunging your baby or toddler into the water for the first time can be a daunting prospect for any parent. We are confident that our classes will bring an exciting new activity to Park Resorts holidaymakers and also the local community.”

Matt Smith, Head of Sports and Leisure at Park Resorts commented: “We are extremely excited to be partnering with Turtle Tots and delivering these fantastic sessions. With safety the number one priority in our swimming pools, getting babies, toddlers and their parents confident in the water is key. Having personally experienced a number of different local swimming sessions with my own toddler it is clear that Turtle Tots have the best offering in this sector and that is down to their excellent training and support.”

Beach Ranger - The Best Job In The World?

Beach combing, feeding fishes, tracking wild animals, rambling round rockpools and rescuing old Christmas trees, these are just some of the fun but very important jobs that Rose Roberts, Beach Ranger, is employed to do every day with her team at Parkdean Holidays Ruda Holiday Park in Devon.

Ruda Holiday Park covers 150 acres of coast and countryside in North Devon and includes the award-winning blue flag beach Croyde Bay, one of the top 10 surf beach breaks in the world.

Rose was appointed as Beach Ranger in June 2014 to lead The Beach Team that look after the surfing mecca Croyde Bay and the surrounding park. This team is part of a wider network of Parkdean employees who look after the 24 award-winning parks in England, Scotland and Wales.

Environmental biologist Rose starts her day by following Devon’s coast road with amazing views of Saunton Sands and Bideford Bay before stopping at Croyde Bay to check on surf conditions so she can tell excited holiday makers what surf board will work best in the waves that day.

When asked what her favourite part of the job is, Rose said: “I support the Parkdean Entertainment team by running rockpool rambles, wild animal tracking sessions, bug hunts and beginners fishing for holiday makers of all ages, which is a really rewarding part of my job.

“The choice of Entertainment at Ruda is incredible, we run activities in the kiids clubs for Tot Stars (children four and under), StarLanders (for those aged four to ten) and Freestyle Teens Club where you can learn to DJ or surf, we also have family discos, Bingo and Showtime Entertainment.

“The extra activities I run are specific to Ruda making it a great place for a longer holiday or somewhere holiday makers can return to year after year – there’s always something new to do and explore.”

When asked how she uses her expertise to protect the beautiful grounds on the Holiday Park, Rose commented: “The geography on this part of the coast is pretty unique which means we often have perfect surf conditions but also have to take extra measures to preserve wildlife habitats. Croyde Bay is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) with mobile sand dunes which move several metres every year. We use discarded Christmas trees in January to re-inforce these dunes, allowing plant roots to spread and make homes for the little creatures like adders, hedgehogs, badgers, foxes, rabbits, weasles and birds that we share the park with.”

The changing seasons dictate Rose’s daily routine. When asked when she is busiest, she said: “I spend peak season showing holiday makers the wonders of Ruda which takes a while as there’s so many amazing parts of the park and it’s inevitably a busier time. In the autumn the beach sometimes collects more rubbish when the seaweed dies off so we organise community litter picks to help keep the beach clean and animals safe from debris, we also have to be vigilant during BBQ season.”

Rose recently introduced the 2 Minute Beach Clean Campaign to Ruda where visitors can borrow a litter picker and bag to spend two minutes helping keep the beach pristine by filling a bag of rubbish - this has become popular with regular visitors and local school groups who love the beach and want to help.

The Beach Team do other tasks to preserve this unique part of the coast including repairing steps, strimming paths, replacing signs and carrying out the annual tree survey which checks for damage or diseases.

Rose isn’t the only one preserving the natural habitats on Parkdean’s Holiday Parks. Chief Executive at Parkdean Holidays, John Waterworth said: “We are really proud of the beautiful areas our parks are found in and we’re currently running a campaign to highlight the amazing outdoor activities available on and around parks so visiting families get out and see Britain at its best. All of our 24 parks have achieved recognition from the David Bellamy Conservation Awards and Ruda has achieved a gold award for enhancing the environment for the last 9 years.”

To sum-up her job Rose discussed her plans for the future, commenting: “We’re introducing honey-bees to Ruda in the coming months to help support the declining honey bee population which is fantastic.

“I will continue to help holiday makers make the most of this special part of the country when they’re on holiday and teach them how we can look after it so it lasts forever.”

The holiday park operator’s apprenticeship programme will offer talented young people the chance to develop their skills in various areas of the business including customer service, administration, grounds keeping, housekeeping, sales, leisure and hospitality.

Parkdean currently has over 30 apprentices training at its parks in Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Norfolk, Scotland and Wales on the 12 month programme, which includes high quality training, a personal mentor and a buddy to fully support and advise the apprentice.

Apprentices receive a weekly wage which is above the national average throughout their apprenticeship.

Samantha Wall, head of recruitment at Parkdean, said: “Parkdean is looking for hardworking, motivated, responsible and positive team-players with an interest in hospitality or travel and a willingness to learn.

Parkdean Holidays has a long-standing and successful relationship with the NECC (North East Chamber of Commerce) based in Gosforth who has supported their apprenticeship programme since it began.

The holiday operator has now also partnered with learndirect, a company which specialises in the recruitment and training of apprentices, for the first time this year to assist them with rolling out the apprenticeship programme throughout the UK.

Steve Morris, Sales Director at learndirect, said: “We’re really pleased to be working with Parkdean on their new Apprenticeship programme. Over the coming months we’ll be helping them to source new people onto Apprenticeships and training their staff so they are qualified and have the knowledge and skills needed so Parkdean can provide an excellent service to their customers.

“At learndirect we’re working with more and more businesses who are seeing the benefits of Apprenticeships: creating a talent pipeline for the future; bringing new people into the business and providing consistent and high quality training, to name three.”

John Waterworth, Chief Executive at Parkdean Holidays, added: “Apprentices are the employees of the future, bringing fresh new talent and ideas into the business, along with a willingness to learn.”

Parkdean’s HR Director Maggie Pavlou added: “Finding employment can often be difficult for school leavers. Our apprenticeship programme gives young people the chance to identify and build on their strengths as well as learn how to use them in a working environment. They gain a recognised qualification whilst working and also get paid a weekly wage.

“We pride ourselves on offering high quality training to our apprentices, allowing them to develop and grow in confidence as they are given more responsibilities.”
